The Tarentaise, around Bourg-Saint-Maurice and Moûtiers, is home to the very large ski areas and the best-known high-altitude resorts. The Maurienne, the long Arc valley running towards Italy, offers resorts on a more human scale, often cheaper, and high-mountain villages such as Bonneval-sur-Arc. Both valleys border the Vanoise National Park.

By motorway to Albertville for the Tarentaise and the Beaufortain, or to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne or Modane for the Maurienne.
